One evening, after supper, Perseus was out at the barn doing his usual end of day chores, when Penelope strolled into the barn.

“Hi, Perseus. Mind if I hang out with you for a while?”

“That would be great. We’ve all been so busy lately; I haven’t seen much of you. I kind of thought maybe you weren’t so happy with me these days.”

“No, not at all. I’ve just been trying to give you a little space. I know you’ve been upset, and everything is so complicated right now.”

“I’m glad you came down here to talk to me, Penelope. I’m frustrated, to be sure, and it’s not just about Bart. I’m still afraid he’s going to do something awful, but I’ve kind of gotten used to living in the shadow of death, something only a man with balls of steel could endure.” He looked up at her with an impish grin.

She giggled and slapped him on the arm. “This situation is intolerable,” she said. “I keep hoping it will all just settle down. This is a critical time of year for the operation, a sort of make-or-break time. We don’t need this kind of distraction. But I want to know what’s on your mind. Are you still thinking of moving on?” She was looking down at the ground when she asked him the question.

She had been following him as he walked along the side of the barn with a water hose. He stopped and looked at her. “I’m not going to move on, at least not willingly. I’ve had plenty of time to think about all this, and I don’t just mean the whole Black Bart thing. I’m still struggling with myself, trying to figure out who I am, but I am beginning to understand that a guy has to put a stake in the ground at some point.”

“I’ve been worried about what my parents might think about me doing this kind of work and living this kind of life. Well, I finally realize that I don’t need to live my life for them. I like this place and the things we do here. I like myself a lot more than I used to, though I know I’ve got more to learn and more maturing to get through. And ... I like you too, Penelope. You and your father are important to me, and I want to continue to be a part of all this.”

She was peering into his eyes, looking like she liked what she was hearing, when there was a heavy thunk as splinters of wood from the barn exploded inches from where they stood. The sound of a gunshot followed almost instantly. They instinctively dove to the ground and Perseus quickly positioned himself between the direction of the shot and Penelope. They began crawling toward the barn door and moved inside. They waited for a couple of minutes but there were no more shots.

Bud and the others ran down from the house, their guns in hand. “What happened?” Bud yelled.
